Islamizing the taleem ….. – 25 (Bashing west? Some important realizations)

10 Nov

(The writing that follows is my dialogue through email with a group on the Topic: Islamizing the Taleem and Tarbiyah of our children. I am maintaining the email format for ease of understanding as well as for maintaining originality of this dialogue.)

(From a sister)
Assalamualaikum brother Abid,

I have been silently following your posts like many readers on this group.
I am a homeschooling mother of 4 alhamdulillah.

Jazakallahu khairein for taking the time out to share your thoughts with us.

Your last post encouraged me to comment as out of most of your posts, this is one that focused on “walking the talk,” (if I may say) i.e giving real life experiences and practical advice as opposed to the same old “bashing/ blaming the west.”

Not much time is spent by the westerners on discussing “us” as much as we spend on discussing “them”.

Agreed there’s ALOT of work to be done by us Muslims…. the hope is, we move on by making the Quran and Sunnah our guide, as you rightly keep reminding us, and apply that.

Jazakalllahu khairein once again…. looking forward to more of what and HOW to do it!

Wassalam;

(My response)
Assalamu Alaikum sister,

Jazaki’Allah for your email. Such emails make me write further and try to develop my case as per the reader’s perspective and understanding. Feedback is so necessary, otherwise it is like walking Braille.

Sorry sister you have misunderstood me. I do not bash west. I do bash their systems to put forward their weaknesses from our Islamic perspective. Unless you know the weaknesses we will continue making mistakes. When we use the word west, generally we mean the people of west. I feel no need to bash the people there. They are doing as per their perception of this life. Their love for research and development has made them develop quite intricate systems – though faulty from Islamic perspective—to meet their requirements. I personally am not as worried about them as I am about us, ourselves. We were given the prophet’s job to project the deen of Allah subhana wa ta’ala to the rest of the world. Are we doing our job? We were required to develop systems based on the principles of Qur’an. How much are we serious about that? Can we ever run a nation without systems? Sister how much seriously are we working on that? When we cannot find systems to run our affairs we have to borrow system from others, which we are doing at present. A great majority of us are extremely impressed by their systems, education is one such system. We are trapped in their educational system and simply are amazed by same, without realizing the total misalignment of this system from the Islamic belief and ideology. Sister what do we require to develop our human resource? The very first and basic requirement is our own education system. We are faltering in this presently. I had ten Islamic schools (not madrassahs) for my sample in my research work. What I discover is that they are following the basic structure of western education system with a few additions here and there to make it Islamic. There have been very little serious efforts in defining the roots of our education system, or redefining education from Islamic perspective on the practical grounds. Do you see this happening? Mine is one such very small effort. By Allah’s grace I can see my way quite clearly.

You may not agree with me, but I feel many of the westerners may be given access to paradise but it is we who will really be passed through very tight mesh or filter. They are unawares because we are not operating as we should be. Pointing fingers at the west is just useless. Qur’an says if we are on the right track no one can harm us. We have to put ourselves on the right track.

My first task is to make my audience realize the process of education or what education really is, and in this attempt I am also exposing the weaknesses of the present education system which many of us are very impressed with, and take it to be ‘THE education system. But I can see it to be a major culprit in our misguidance. The perception that this system develops is nearly totally divergent or contrary to the Islamic perception which Qur’an develops. Unless this is realized, it is useless to move any further. If you observe my main focus is on perception and the process of perception, not bashing the west. The western system is automatically bashed as we are following western systems at present, which are to be critically discussed from our Islamic and from nature’s perspective. I am a lot dependent upon my audience to provide me with feed-backs to make my writing effective to the group. I will be grateful if you and other sisters and brothers in this group help me in this.

Insha’Allah once I get some assessment that the audience have followed me on my definition and explanation on perception and the role it plays in the process of education I will be moving to the next step which is the learning approaches and abilities of young children where I will request the readers to share their experiences; and then we will move to the next step expressing my views about how we can help our children in developing Qur’anic/Islamic perception in natural ways. How we can really educate our children?

May Allah subhana wa ta’ala accept these efforts from us.

Truly,
Br. Abid.
