Islamizing the taleem ….. – 57 (Perception mechanism: Acikgenc’s worldview theory – 2)

(My dialogue through email with a group on the Topic: Islamizing the Taleem and Tarbiyah of our children)

Assalamu Alaikum,

As per Dr. Alparsalan Acikgenc’s theory a person’s world view can be natural that s/he develops automatically living in an environment and it has a part which is transparent worldview which s/he develops by intentional learning processes. (My own remark: If the learning is healthy this worldview will also be positive and healthy and vice versa).

Dr. Acikgenc further elaborates that a person’s worldview is created automatically by his learning and experiences since her/his birth, and each person has a worldview or mental framework within which his mind works. A person cannot work outside his worldview. It is in fact a perspective from which an individual views everything. For example within this group we see people having different thinking styles and opinions, which he sincerely believes is correct. Is it not so?  His opinions and views are the result of his developed worldview. This worldview this person has developed through either informal/natural learning or formal learning. This development has been automatically taking place without his knowledge even. Same way when we pass our children through an educational process, the education that we impart to our children will automatically develop their worldview without our realization. This worldview will largely depend upon what education we have provided him with. Be it secular or religious (from our perspective); be it broad or narrow. It will most definitely leave its influence on her/his worldview/perception.

As per Acigenc our worldview is a composition and combination of different concept structures in our mind which can be named:

Life Structure, (our concept about this life)
World Structure,
Knowledge Structure,
Value Structure,
Man Structure,
etc, etc.

With each new knowledge and experience the worldview keeps on altering little or greatly. Thus the worldview is not fixed and keeps on adjusting by the new learning experiences.

This was the gist of Dr. Acigenc’s theory on worldview. I will further discuss on this theory in my next mail insha’Allah. My whole purpose by these discussions is to make my audience realize the importance of a person’s perception/worldview/thought structure/ amal e idrak / thought dimension (or whatever you like to call it) and how they are affected by his educational processes. The education is not inert or effect-less, and will most certainly involve in the development of a child’s personality and character. The challenge for us is how to design education from Allah the Creator’s perspective, for our children’s success in this life and the a’akhira (next life).
